Canadian Equestrians named to Leadership Roles within the Canadian Olympic Committee

Members of Equine Canada continue to earn the confidence of the national sport community to help lead Canada's Olympic movement.

Ottawa, Ontario - Wednesday, 01 December 2010

Equine Canada is proud to announce that the ranks of Canadian equestrians named to leadership roles in the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) continue to grow.

Victoria Winter (Toronto), one of our Dressage athletes, has served as a member of the COC Athletes’ Council since 1998, and was named to the COC Audit Committee in 2009. A multiple Pan American Games bronze medallist, Victoria represented Canada most recently at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

Kerri McGregor (Newmarket), our Chef de Mission, was named to the Canadian Olympic Committee Sport Relations Committee in 2009, and serves as our voting member at the COC Session. Earlier this year, Kerri coordinated the largest-ever Canadian Equestrian Team at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.

Akaash Maharaj (Almonte), our Chief Executive Officer, will now join Victoria and Kerri, as he was named to the COC Governance and Ethics Committee during this past weekend’s Session. A triple FEI International Championships gold medallist, Akaash has led our federation over the past three years, through our most successful Olympics, Paralympics, and World Equestrian Games. He has set his personal priorities for his role with the COC as expanding transparency, democracy and public accountability in COC governance.

“Akaash was named by the Board of the COC to the Governance and Ethics Committee. This young man is bright and articulate, and he places a lot of importance on ethics. He is a great asset to the committee,” Marcel Aubut, President of the COC. “This committee is the watch dog of COC operations, and the COC wants to have the best Governance and Ethics Committee considering its importance in this day and age. The competence of Akaash makes him a fantastic addition.”
