The length of my last writing hiatus would make Rip Van Winkle blush, but with a new year upon us, I have decided to allow hope to triumph over experience, and return to blogging.

While my blog slept, Twitter arrived in a hail of terse utterances, and has proven to be a relatively congenial task-master. As a result, I will be twittering daily and writing more substantial articles at my blog occasionally.

My first article of the new year appears as an opinion piece in today's National Post, and it deals with the extraordinary retreat from the truth in the national debate on the war in Afghanistan.

The Conservative government’s refusal to engage honestly with Canadians over why we went to Afghanistan and what we are trying to achieve there is a cynical ploy that is unworthy of the valour of our troops and prejudices their chances for success in combat.

If we are to have any hope of victory in Afghanistan, the truth must no longer be a casualty of this war.
